Planning on remodeling your kitchen or bathroom soon? You might be thinking about paint colors, fixtures, lighting, and your countertops as well. There are tons of options when it comes to choosing countertops for your kitchen or bathroom remodel. What you choose largely depends on your style and the plans you have for your space, but as Birmingham, AL’s trusted countertop installation company, we want to help note some of the pros and cons of different materials to help find what you’re looking for.
Granite
Granite has been a top countertop choice among homeowners for a long while as they have been seen as being elegant and add a bit of luxury to a space. They can withstand heat, which allows you to be able to place your pots and pans on them and not worry about damages. They are also strong and durable making them scratch resistant, which is great if you have a lot of foot traffic in your kitchen. Another great thing about granite? There are plenty of colors to choose from making it extra customizable for your space!
Cons to granite countertops? Granite is normally more expensive than other materials and you may find that certain slabs have imperfections. These countertops can crack and the stone is porous so to avoid stains it’s best to seal it.
Soapstone
Throughout the years, soapstone has made a return and is often seen as a substitute for granite. If you’re going for a historical or even antique look, soapstone is a great choice! Each slab is a dark, rich color and is mostly stain resistant. It can handle some heat but isn’t as capable as granite. If soapstone gets damaged it can be sanded out and back to looking brand new! The dark color of soapstone can get even darker over time and the countertops must be maintained with mineral oil. Soapstone is a bit softer and can scratch and dent fairly easily.
Marble
Another popular countertop option is marble and because no two slabs of marble are the same, your marble countertop will be unique to you. It’s a fairly expensive material but can definitely increase the value of your home! Marble is waterproof and heatproof and the veiny look of it can add a beautiful touch to your space. If scratched, repairs can be a bit tricky and much like granite, it is porous and can stain easily unless it is sealed.
Quartz
Quartz is an engineered stone that contains quartz and other materials and unlike natural stone, Quartz does not require sealing. It is scratch, heat, and stain resistant, making it our most easily maintained and reliable surface for countertops. Quartz can be custom fabricated into any shape and comes with no imperfections. The main con to quartz might be that it can be expensive but if you’re looking to invest in a countertop, quartz is a great option!
